Today I was staggering through my town's unkempt Burlington Coat Factory, two-year-old in tow, when a woman picked out the most hideous bed spread I'd ever seen. It wouldn't have been all that weird except at Ross another woman had done exactly the same thing. I have the best taste in linens, after all.
Two days ago my son was trying to talk his buddy into eating the sauce on his "reawy good" cordon bleu (don't be impressed--it was pre-made). But his friend was actually crying in his refusal. Real tears!
I hate Christmas music. The world loves it. And trust me, I love Christ. I'm just the biggest Grinch I know. Ask me why I have a Christmas book on my sidebar...
My living room used to be pink. And at one time we had a wall paper border running down the center of a wall.
I sneer at these opposing tastes, but it's true isn't it? We don't like the same things! Isn't it crazy how humanity is so much alike yet simultaneously anything but similar?
And why is it that most of us are terrified by the thought of someone particular dressing us? Yes, you said it--our mothers.
Which is so great for stories and thus storytellers. Different genres pull us in; some will never suffer through a story with a sad ending, others crave anything artsy.
So in my mind today, I celebrate differences in preferences. That way at least one person on the planet is bound to like my book!
What is something you love that most hate? Or vice versa.
Great post, Mary, a much-needed reminder that we're different and like different stuff and IT IS OKAY!!
ReplyDeleteI love to stay in my house and never go out, and most people hate that. Most people like to get out and have "fun" as they call it. I've got to go somewhere this evening--a party, a dinner, woo woo, everyone's so excited--and I don't even want to get out of my pj's. But I have to go, so I'll be there, and probably be the first one to leave. And you thought you were the Grinch. Ha! It's me.
I love that we are all different, but I want ya'll to be different like me. lol I was shopping with my MIL one day and I picked up a blouse and asked her oppinion, "What do you think of this?". She looked at it and said "No!". Ok then I thought, I will buy it and I did. I think of her not liking it and wonder why, everytime I wear it.
ReplyDeleteI will like your book!!! Merry Christmas!
I try to remind myself of this when I'm feeling low because someone didn't like something of mine. Not everyone will like what I do, what I write, what I say, etc...I wish they did, but alas, I don't like everything I see either, even though someone obviously chose to wear those spandex leggings with that hideous polk-a-dot sweater. But, as my grandmother taught me, To each his own.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
Hey, I hear pink walls are the newest in. :) I think I might paint Afton pink and see if it looks good. It might bring out her eyes! :) I'll keep you posted.
ReplyDeleteAww, I feel so loved! Thanks for commenting guys!
ReplyDeleteKaren, I am RIGHT with you. I am the quintessential home body.
Delilas, I'll be looking for that blouse. Point it out to me some Sunday.
Carolina, HOW did polka-a-dot EVER get in style??
Tracy, if you painted Afton's room pink that would be okay. Little girl's rooms, yes. Living rooms? No.
Good Post Mary, and I am sure that a lot more than 1 person will like your book at least 3 or 4. Thats 3 to 400% beyond your expectations.
ReplyDeleteI love watching terrible movies because they make me laugh-ever seen Mystery Science Theater 3000? My wife can't stand my bad movies. I still like good ones but there is secret joy in the truly terrible.
I loathe a lot of popular music-Dave Matthews/John Mayer/basically stuff that claims to be rock but you know darn well it isn't.
Is it sad that all I can think of is food? I love green olives and smoked oysters and chicken hearts.
ReplyDeleteI love Mystery Science Theater 3000! I tend to like tv shows that get canceled, so I've given up watching.
I married a grinch.
I would rather speak in front of 400 people than one person I don't know well.
Hm. Not just food, I guess. Thanks, M. Merry Christmas!!
David, looks like i'd better watch for ol' Mystery Science Theater 3000. It would take a special mood for me though. And thanks for your optimism. I'll watch for those 3 or 4 people.
ReplyDeleteChicken hearts, Krista? Really?? That's disgusting! Thanks for sharing!
I love polka dots. And if you love Mystery Science Theater 3000 you will probably love Ghost Rider with Nicholas Cage. Hilarious! But I don't know if it is meant to be.
ReplyDeletePolka dots. Hmph. Such a savage little design. ;)
ReplyDeleteDifferent is good. God loves wonderous variety.
